It’s 10
years today since 070707 and thought it was maybe time for a moment of
reflection to remember the Stanley people who were on the list to
attend the 070707 reunion and sadly are no longer with us today.
In no particular order:
Bob
Scott the former Provost of Perth and Kinross who opened the
event. Peter Cameron
Vice Chairman of the 070707 committee.
Peter was a former neighbour in Manse Cres and I knew him all
of my life without one cross word. He
did a great job in advertising the website to ex Stanley folk (or
anyone) he came into contact with and was a mine of information on all
things Stanley. Not only do I miss his friendship but all the help he
gave in providing information/anecdotes/photos for the
website. On a personal note now my eldest sister Edna Gourlay
(nee Donaldson) and nephew Denis Allan (Denis was on the list
but work commitments prevented him attending). Bill Hancock who
had travelled from Penang Malayasia to be there. Jim Whytock Snr
and Jim Whytock Jnr former next door neighbours in Manse Cres
for many years. James
Stewart. Kate Gairns. Beth Kennedy. Mhairi
Kay. May Williamson (nee
O’Brien). Helen Smith
(nee O’Brien). Rene Coghlan (nee O’Brien). Millie Stewart.
Abby Duff. Jack
& Isobel Ford. Bob
O’Brien. Ron (Pike) Smith.

Guest Book
|
The
Guest Book has been offline since just before Christmas and I'll try to
explain why without boring you to death. You are probably not aware
but when you set up a website you have to pay an annual fee for a
domain name ie Stanley Perthshire as well as renting webspace on the
internet (similar to Council tax - the bigger house/space you need -
the higher the fee). To have a Guest Book on your site you also
have to find another provider and in my case I paid a one off fee when
the website was set up in 2005 to Guestbook World.com which was run by
Leslie Wright a singer/songwriter from Arkansas. This was about
the only Guest Book available that was ad free. Just over a year
ago Leslie who is now a web designer - check her website out at www.lesliewrightproductions.com
sold the rights to Guest Book World for a four figure sum and the new
owner decided to start charging an annual maintenance fee - probably
to recoup their costs - which I rather grudgingly paid bearing in mind
the original deal ie "one off fee". This story
is getting even more boring and I apologise for this but you need to
know when the website is updated a copy needs to be saved on a memory
stick/USB/flash drive/disc whatever you want to call it from the last
backup and I do this without fail. However, I cannot backup the
Guest Book as it is a separate entity from the website.
Unfortunately last month when the Guest Book was being transferred or
updated to another server by the new Guest Book owner this
process failed. When they tried to re-install it they
found the backup disc was corrupted. Whilst it may be possible to
recover the Guest Book I have been told it is unlikely that the
historical entries made over the last 12 years will still exist which
is really disappointing to put it mildly. The current Guest Book
owner is absolutely distraught about the situation too and has had
someone working on it but it has been a while now so I doubt whether
the outcome is going to be good. We have also lost the tally of
the number of visitors to the website which was just short of 100000.
I have been looking at new Guest Books or perhaps a forum instead but
will wait a week or two before going ahead and making the change.
If you have any suggestions/ideas on the way forward then please let me know.

Stanley Post Office
|
For reasons I am not
qualified to comment upon or offer an opinion the Post Office functions
of Stanley Post Office has been transferred to the Spar shop further
along Percy Street (formerly the old Co-op). This is
almost exactly opposite where the Post Office used to be situated up
until the 1950's at 35 Percy Street now home to Lodge Stanley
1262. George Cramb was the first Postmaster in the current or
should I say ex Post Office. Stanley Post Office is not closing
and I understand it will now be a general store. I have heard
nothing but praise for the staff there and wish them all the best for
the future. Pictured below are the owners Stanley and Morag
Middleton and their assistant Gillian Davie. (Thanks to Leslie Fraser
who took the photo for the West Stormont Historical Society.)

Robert (Robbie) Buchan
- 1947 - 1969
|
Commemorative
Service Birkhill Cemetery Dundee 5th August 2016
|
Following previous
items on the Notice Board I was privileged to attend this service for
Robbie, a former classmate at Stanley School 1962-63. Through
Jimmy Donaldson I was approached by the Tay Valley Family History
Society who had been asked to research Robbie's background on behalf
of Colonel Fred Fairhead (pictured below), his Commanding Officer, who
in writing his memoirs wanted information on Jock (Robbie) who had
come from Scotland and had given his life on a tour of duty serving in
Vietnam. Talking to the Colonel at the ceremony it would appear
that Robbie's actions that day probably saved the lives of 14 of his
platoon comrades and the fact that he journeyed across to Scotland to
organise the Service and pay his respects meant so much to him.
|
At the ceremony I met
a lovely couple who had been good friends and farming neighbours of
his Mum and Dad at Craigdallie near Inchture where the family finally
settled in the Carse and also his first employer at the Dairy Farm
near Errol whose family still have "The Horn" roadside
eatery after he finished his studies at Lawers Agricultural College
where he attended after leaving Stanley School.
|
Robbie was a cousin to
Rena Lambert who now resides in Australia and I think his grandfather
was Tam Davidson also from the village. I was not aware of the
Dundee connection until the articles appeared in the local
press. Those of you who knew Robbie will remember him as an
outgoing and likeable guy who was good fun and loved his sport
expecially cricket.

The late Robert
Buchan
|
|
A wee update on the
article posted in June 2014 regarding Robert Buchan who was killed in
action in Vietnam in 1969 aged 22.
Rena Lambert now resident in Australia and formerly of Athole Drive
Stanley believes she is the only living relative of Robert (or Robbie
as he was known). Although there is no mention of Stanley in the
newspaper article Robbie attended Stanley School and is in a 1962
school photo on the website. Also for
a short video of The Last Post Ceremony taken at the Australian War
Memorial in Canberra commemorating the service of (55613) Private
Robert Buchan 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment Vietnam War.
|
|
Strictly speaking this
photo has nothing to do with Stanley but Nan Tait who recently took it
thought it would be of interest to the Stanley expats. It shows
the poppies "Weeping Window" at the Black Watch Castle and
Museum to mark the centenary of the First World War. The display
is on until 25th September 2016 and she says it is well worth a visit.

Stanley Parish
Church
|
Local people will have
read in the press the bad news about Stanley Parish Church which was
severely damaged during Storm Frank but I am including this note for
the benefit of those who do not live locally. Officials at the
Church of Scotland say that £1.5 million would be needed to safeguard
the building for the next 20 years. Simply to make the church
safe for temporary use would require more than half a million
pounds. Because of the huge costs it is unlikely the church will
ever re-open.

Thanks to Ivan Haggart
for his very generous donation of £500.00 towards my costs in
leasing the Stanley website domain name and webspace from 1 & 1 Internet

should cover the above costs until 2020. Thanks again Ivan -
your generosity is much appreciated.

Stanley Parish
Church
|
Stanley people
everywhere will be disappointed to learn that our church is closed due
to structural damage and will shortly be cordoned off owing to its
unsafe condition. In 1828 the
Proprietors of the Mill petitioned for a Church built for more than
£3000. Formerly called the Tower Church it was raised to quoad sacra status
in 1877. Further information will be given when it is available but in the
meantime normal Sunday Services are being held in the Village
Hall which co-incidentally used to be St James' Church.

Guest Book
|
Apologies that the
Guest Book was temporarily unavailable for a few days earlier this
month. The Company I purchased the Guest Book from 10
years ago (Leslie Wright of guestbookworld.com - Leslie is an American
singer/songwriter) charged a one off
setting up fee. The Company has recently changed hands and the new owners
who are UK based are now demanding an
annual rental fee. Now that I'm aware of this the fee has been
paid for 2016 so hopefully it won't go offline again this year.
There are numerous free Guest Books available but they are littered
with pop up ads and I wanted to avoid this on the Stanley
website. This is the reason I chose Guest Book World in
2005.

June 2014
|
The late Robert
Buchan
|
|
|
Military
historians are desperate to trace relatives of a Scottish soldier who
died in the Vietnam War to get their permission for his name to be
added to a new memorial. Lance
Corporal Robert Buchan fought with Australian forces and died, aged
22, in a hail of AK47 bullets after ordering his men to take cover as
he scouted an enemy position.
Now
officials in the U.S. want to recognise his sacrifice in a new 'Wall
Of Faces' memorial to be erected next to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
wall in Washington, DC. But
his name can only be added with the permission of his relatives, none
of whom have so far been traced.
L/Cpl
Buchan first emigrated with his family to Australia in 1951, when he
was 3. His family returned to Scotland nine years later, but he
decided to return to Australia alone in 1966.
Two years
later, he signed up for the army and was assigned to the 6th
Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment.
The
machine gunner from Dundee was a piper but refused to join the
army’s band, preferring to serve in a combat unit, where he was
known to comrades as 'Jock'.
The
regiment began its tour of duty in Vietnam in May 1969. In December of
the same year the battalion located and destroyed a large cache of
Viet Cong explosives at Phuoc Tuy.
It was
there that L/Cpl Buchan died.
'Robert
was commanding his section along a well-used track when his forward
scout signalled the location of a bunker 15 metres in front,' said
Richard Cousins, an Australian military historian.
'He went
forward to investigate and directed a second forward scout into
position on either side of the track.'The enemy opened fire from a
distance of 10 metres, hitting Robert with small arms fire.'
Historians
believe that had it not been for L/Cpl Buchan’s decision to stop his
platoon, many of his men would have been killed.
His
father, also Robert, told a reporter after learning of his son's
death: 'He sent home "signing on" papers two years ago and
little did I think I would be signing his life away.'
Mr
Cousins said: 'In November 2012 the US defence secretary Leon Panetta
made special mention of the contribution made by Australia to the
Vietnam war.
'In
recognition, a centre is being constructed adjacent to the Vietnam
Wall of Remembrance in Washington DC. This memorial will be opened in
2015.
'The
central feature of this will be a Wall of Faces, a digital display of
the images of those who died, including the images of the 521
Australians.
'Following
a request from the the Office of Australian War Graves, Barney and I
have researched and made contact with Robert’s infantry platoon,
providing us with photos and details on this highly regarded and brave
soldier.'
In
1987 - 12 years after the conflict ended - a 'Welcome Home' Parade was
held in Sydney, with flags presented to the families of the 521
Australian soldiers who died during the conflict.
L/Cpl
Buchan’s flag was never presented to his family, and Mr Cousins
would like to see his family receive this poignant token.
Mr
Cousins believes L/Cpl Buchan’s family lived in Perth, central
Scotland, and efforts to track relatives are concentrated on that
area.
The
Vietnam War was one of Australia’s longest and most controversial
conflicts. The country sent 30 military advisors in 1962 but more than
7,600 troops were eventually committed.
Five
hundred Australian soldiers never returned, while more than 3,000 were
wounded. The Vietnamese government has estimated that the war's total
death toll - including civilians and soldiers on both sides - amounted
to as many as 3.1million.
Do
you know any of L/Cpl Buchan's living relatives? Send an email to
reporter Damien Gayle at damien.gayle@dailymail.co.uk

Alan Reid
|
From Peter Cameron (70)
Stanley born and bred but now living in Dunkeld.
|
|
My 16 year old
grandson's girlfriend, Christy, lives in Scone. Her grandad is
one Alan Reid, (ex St Johnstone & Arbroath footballer in the late
1950's), who was a PT teacher at Stanley School in the early
1960's. My grandson (Cameron Robinson) was going to a family dinner at Scone one day
and I printed off this photo of Stanley Secondary's football team and
gave it to my grandson to show to Alan.
|
|
Cameron was astounded
when Alan rattled off NEARLY ALL their names.
Incredible!!! On the down side however. Several weeks ago, Alan
now in his 80's, had a fall in his house and punctured a lung, broke
his collar bone, etc. He has been in hospital ever since and
recently came out of Intensive Care. He is still in hospital and
making a slow recovery. Best wishes to him from all the
ex-Stanley Secondary footballers, and indeed all the ex-pupils.

Bob Scott OStJ, JP
Former Provost of
Perth and Kinross
|
It was with great
sadness the people of Stanley and Luncarty as well as the wider
community of Perth and Kinross learned of the death of Bob Scott at
Cornhill Macmillan Centre, Perth on Thursday 17th October 2013.
Although he lived in Luncarty, Bob and his sister Anne attended
Stanley Junior Secondary School, the third generation of "Bob
Scott" to have done so. Bob lived a busy and fulfilling
life. He was a local Councillor, serving on a number of
committees and ultimately held the Civic position of Provost of Perth
and Kinross. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant of the
County. As an Elder of Redgorton and Stanley Parish Church he
was involved in many groups and committees within the Church, and also
served as a Presbytery Elder. Bob had many interests, one of
which was lighthouses and he travelled the length and breadth of the
country to visit them. He was a rare individual, a man who made
time for whoever spoke to him. As has been pointed out by many
people, "Bob was a good man". The world will be poorer
for his passing, but richer for his time with us. Following a
private cremation a Thanksgiving Service is to be held in St John's
Kirk, Perth on Friday 25th October. Thoughts and prayers are
with Anne, Colin and their family at this sad time.

Jim Whytock
|
|
On Sunday 10 January
2013, Jim Whytock, in his 100th year, died peacefully in Moncrieffe
Care Home. Jim was born at Craigend of Gourdie, Caputh and was formerly a Manse Crescent
resident having lived there since the houses were completed in June 1947.
Prior to that when WWII broke out he enlisted in the Royal Electrical
and Mechanical Engineers (REME) as a driver and was captured at St
Valery in France in 1940 and taken to Poland as a Prisoner of War
(POW). During his incarceration he was loading coal when he went
to the aid of a prisoner who had collapsed. A guard bayoneted
Jim in the backside and in retaliation Jim grabbed the guard's gun and
threw it to the ground. The guard was later transferred to the
Russian Front - not for the cruel bayoneting incident but for allowing
his gun to be taken away. After a period in solitary confinement
Jim recovered when in the winter of 1944/45 he was forced to take part
in what became known as the Long March. With the Russians
approaching, the Germans decided to abandon their camps and head
west. Forced to march around 1000 miles in the coming weeks,
hundreds of prisoners succumbed to the cold and the gruelling march,
perishing along the way. Jim had made a deal with an Australian POW
for a pair of boots and believed this is why he did not suffer from
frostbite. He eventually was freed by some Americans and
returned home to become a Railway Signalman, a job that he loved. He kept himself
busy in retirement and was a member of Lodge Stanley 1262.
In 2012 he was
presented with his Jubilee Certificate from the Lodge (50 years loyal
service). R.I.P.

Bill Hancock
|
|
At
this time, Bill Hancock’s friends and family are mourning his
passing away from lung cancer in New Zealand on 18 July 2012 at the
age of 78 years.
Bill left Stanley in 1951 at the age of 17 years and joined the
Royal Navy as a junior stoker.
He spent most of his Service career in submarines and his
talents were recognised by being selected for a two year engineering
course which saw him advanced to Petty Officer. In 1973 he left the Royal Navy
as an Engineer Lieutenant - a magnificent
achievement in those days to have progressed to that rank.
He then transferred to the Royal New Zealand
Navy and ended his Service career there as a Lieutenant Commander.
Bill was well travelled and had latterly been living in Penang,
Malaysia but he still retained a keen interest in Stanley and
attended the 2007 reunion. R.I.P. Bill.

To
Jimmy Donaldson (Hartlepool) & Ian Wells (Aberdeen).
A
very big thank you for your visit to my home in Dunkeld about mid-day
on Sunday 20/03/11. (I should really have been at church but had a
very sore knee) I felt very humble that two lads, younger than
myself, and coming back to Stanley, before heading off to The
Emirates Stadium in London to support Scotland against Brazil,
would fit in the time to give me a visit. I thoroughly
enjoyed their visit, to the extent that I was asked to join them
on a walk down the back of the Mill on the Sunday. Funnily
enough, my knee never bothered me till the return journey and we
decided to go from the road between Scottie's auld hoose (at
the Mill gates) just a couple of hundred yards along to
Jock Taylors auld hoose at the orchard, then the Red Lodge we
decided to take a return trip , via the Curling Pond, before we reached
Scottie's hoose. The Curley was a big disappointment. Nae
water and everything overgrown. However. On
Stanley On. Thanks for the visit. Funny how all the
true Stanleyites, Gordon Howie, Billy Hancock, Sandy Wann, Dave
Berwick, & Jimmy & Ian. who have been all over the world,
always like to start their homecoming with a trip down the 'back
o' the mill".

Stewart Buchan - The
Garage
|
It was with very deep regret
that the villagers learned of the death of Stewart Buchan, in his
93rd year, of the garage fame on Perth Road, where he carried on
the garage business with his cousin, Willie, after Harry Blair and his
family emigrated to Canada, in the 1950's. The garage, still
carried on to this day, by his nephews, Ally & Graeme Buchan,
who run an excellent mini-bus service, and still, despite other
shops & businesses in the village closing, remain in
recent years, one of the few places where the old
Stanleyites can meet & reminisce. He was a tremendously
popular lad Stewart. You always got him the same, cheery &
smiling, and he will be sadly missed by his close family & all who
knew him. Peter Cameron

Claire
Betts (Gordon & Linda Jolly's daughter) along with a group
from Ireland, New Zealand and England climbed Mont Blanc reaching the
summit on 17th September 2009. Claire said it was a hard climb
but well worth it. Mont Blanc, at 4810 metres is the highest
mountain in Western Europe and is on the three way border of France,
Italy and Switzerland. A leading topographer, Bernard Dupont,
recently reported that the mountain is 45cm (18 inches) shorter than
two years ago and the volume of snow and ice coating on the summit has
also fallen by a tenth. He said that the shrinkage could not be
linked directly to climate change. The highest point of Mont
Blanc has also moved 85 feet closer to Italy although it remains in
France. Last year Clair and her
husband Robert climbed Kilimanjaro.

Neil Rodger wrote that
his son is treating him to the Runrig concert at Scone Palace on 29th

at the concert please say hello. He says that after all this
time he doubts if his memory will work to spot old friends as the
years will have changed a lot of us. Here's a photo of
him:
Further
to the above Neil has contacted me again to say he will be unable to
attend the concert because he has not recovered rapidly enough from a
laryngectomy (removal of the vocal chords) after a cancer operation.
If anyone is interested in two tickets to the concert at face value
please contact him on 01553 675676 and ask for his son Andrew as Neil
cannot speak yet. (Footnote: Neil passed away on 3rd July

Kate Gairns died in
Perth Royal Infirmary on 8th June 2009 aged 87 years. Kate was a
well known and respected member of the village and very much involved
in village life with interest in The Guild, SWRI, Community Council,
Village Hall Committee, and the Historical Society. Her
experience of working life in Stanley Mills (she started work at 14
and worked there for 41 years) was invaluable in the setting up of the
Historic Scotland Museum at Stanley Mills. She was also a very
enthusiastic contributor of photos to this website. Although Kate had
undergone a partial leg amputation in 2008, she maintained her
indomitable spirit and sense of fun. A mark of esteem held by
Kate in the village was witnessed by the capacity attendance at her
funeral in Stanley Parish Church on Monday 15th June 2009.

page
Nel married Jim Dow of Kinnoull Hill Perth and they had 4
children; Stewart, Duncan, Frank (died at birth) and Margaret
and lived in Store Street Stanley. The family emigrated to
Toronto in 1946 and a fifth child, Glen was born in 1948. Her
husband James died in Toronto in April 1958 and she remarried Eric
Pearson of Toronto in 1961. Eric passed away in 1994. Nel spent
her golden years in retirement in her "little cottage" in

Happy Birthday to my
Dear Dad John Kay
I
would like to send All my Love and Best Wishes to my Dad John
Kay
who was 80 years old on the 12th September. He was born in
Percy St. and later went to school at Queen Victoria School for boys
in Dunblane and went on to join the Royal Scots Regiment stationed
in Edinburgh. He came back to Stanley to stay about 1952 with
my Mum, sister Elizabeth myself Janet and my brother John who
was born in 1955. Dad became a postman in Stanley like his father
Willie Kay who was well known in Stanley. I've just had a
lovely musical nostalgic trip round Stanley on the computer.

years young on the 3rd September 2005. Surely one of the village's

I would like to add my congratulations
and best wishes to Mrs Daisy McKinlay on her birthday just past. She
was a good friend of my mother 'way back. Her daughter Maisie was a
classmate of mine circa'38/'46. Good on you Mrs Mac.

away peacefully in PRI on 14th September 2006 - 11 days after her 96th
